Sudan: Dozens killed, hundreds injured in three weeks of rains, floods
Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) – Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds injured in three weeks of rains and floods that caused the collapse of hundreds of houses in Khartoum and other states, a Ministry of Health report said on Wednesday.
The report, compiled by the Emergency and Humanitarian Action Department at the Sudanese Ministry of Health, said 77 people were killed and over 250 injured during three weeks of heavy rains and floods that hit most parts of Sudan.
The Ministry's report said 51 localities in Sudan's 15 states had been affected, with the national capital Khartoum, Kasala, Nahr al nil, North Darfur and White Nile states, being the worst hit.
The official Sudan news agency, SUNA, which published a summary of the report, said that 227 persons suffered broken limbs and injuries because of the collapse of houses while one case of electricity shock was reported.
The floods resulted in the total collapse of over 15,000 houses in addition to over 20,000 others which had partial damage. Over 36,000 families were affected as a result of these developments.
The Ministry's report said Sudan was able to manage the crisis without getting any foreign assistance or making an appeal for help.
The Ministry added that thanks to an intensive spraying campaign and precautionary health measures, no case of an endemic was reported in all affected areas.
The Ministry said these measures included spraying, pest control, fighting of flies and insects at the early stages before they posed any health hazard in the affected areas.
The government has been warning families and those living along the river Nile that they should be cautious, as apart from the rains and local floods, huge quantities of waters are heading northwards.
