South Africa's Deputy President Paul Mashatile attends SADC extraordinary meeting

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South Africa'a Deputy President Paul Mashatile will participate in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Meeting in Harare on Wednesday.

SADC earlier this month called for the summit to address the deepening post-election crisis in Mozambique  where at least 21 peopkle people have been killed by security forces since protests erupted after the disputed 9 October election, 

“(The) summit is expected to be briefed on political events in the region, including the recent elections in Mozambique and Botswana and upcoming polls in Namibia,” Zimbabwe’s Information Minister Janfran Muswere said. 

Delegates will also receive an update on the security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and also consider a report carried out on SADC Mission in the DRC, as well as review the mandate to inform the future of the mission before it expires on 14 December.

South Africa, through its participation and contribution to the SADC Mission in the DRC, continues to play an important role in efforts to bring about peace and security in the region. 

The summit will be preceded by the Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit Plus SADC Mission in the DRC Troop Contributing Countries to be held earlier in the day.
