Kenya steps up security after Osama killing

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Following the killing of the leader of the terror group, Al Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan over the weekend, Kenyan security agencies have intensified security in the capital, Nairobi, the port City of Mombasa and the Kenya-Somalia border.

Informed security sources told PANA security had been reinforced in Kogelo village, western Kenya, where US President Barack Obama's paternal grandmother, Sarah, and other relatives live.

Osama was killed by US security forces after they raided a compound near Islamabad, Pakistan, which doubled as his hideout.

President Obama is a US citizen of Kenyan ancestry.

His late father, Barrack Obama Snr, was an economist, while his mother, also deceased, was American.

Reports indicated that the number of police officers guarding Mama Sarah's home 24 hours has been increased.

Welcoming the killing of Osama, a government security spokesman said security forces would remain extra-vigilant along the Kenya-Somalia border because Somali's militia, Al Shabab, linked to Al Qaeda, has been fighting the Somali government.

At the same time, the Kenya government will up the security patrols and vigilance in Nairobi and the port city of Mombasa and the country as a whole.

Osama's killing came a few days after Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere warned of an impending Al Shabab attack and asked Kenyans to be extra-vigilant and avoid crowded places like night spots, shopping malls and bus termini during the recent Easter Holidays

On August 7, 1998, some 253 people, among them 13 US Embassy staff, died when terrorists bombed the US Embassy in Nairobi.

It was a horrible day in East Africa as the terrorists linked to Al Qaeda also struck the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Shortly after, Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the twin-bombing of the embassies.
