Banjul, Gambia (PANA) – Gambian Vice President and Minister of Women Affairs Ousainou Darboe has called for collective effort to end gender-based violence and related cases in the country, stating that the government cannot tackle it alone.

He made the statement at the launch of the ministry's sexual and gender-based violence unit to protect women against domestic violence in the country.

“The fight against gender-based violence cannot be done by the government alone. The government needs the partnership and the collaboration of our development partners, civil services organizations and the media,” he said.

The Vice President noted that women and children are the most vulnerable people in communities.

He added: “The government of the Gambia after ratification of international and regional treaties and also the convention on elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, and the African Charter on the Rights of the Child, Gambia came up with national laws that are in line with the promotion and protection of rights of women and children.”

He emphasized that the new measures, policies and strategies "will not only create awareness on women and children, but will be strictly enforced to benefit the most vulnerable people in our society.”
