Darfur military panel agrees to push workplan
Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - A Darfurian ceasefire monitoring Commission has agreed to regularly meet in pushing its mandate, according to a PANA report.
The Ceasefire Commission (CFC), chaired by the Commander of the African Union/UN Hybrid Mission for Darfur (UNAMID), Lieutenant-General Patrick Nyamvumba, held its second meeting in El Fasher, North Darfur.
The participants, which included senior representatives of the Government of the Sudan and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM), decided to meet on a regular basis every two weeks in order to push ahead its task.
"The meeting took place in a friendly and cordial atmosphere and there was a willingness from all parties to pursue the goal of the Commission," UNAMID said.
The CFC under UNAMID was established to implement the provisions of various peace deals signed by parties to the conflict in Darfur, dating back to the N’Djamena Humanitarian Ceasefire accord of 2008.
It has now been strengthened by the signing of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) between the Sudanese Government and LJM on 14 July, 2011.
The Commission’s functions are critical to the implementation of the provisions of the DDPD, and ultimately the permanent ceasefire and final security arrangements.
These functions include monitoring all violations against the DDPD as well as older accords, monitoring of dialogue among parties that have signed the agreement and ensuring the safety of those implementing these accords.
